SLS is seeking an R&D Chemist to join our Environmental Chemistry Laboratory in Sydney. This hybrid role combines research and development activities with routine analytical testing to support method improvement, validation, and implementation within our laboratory operations.
The successful candidate will contribute to method development, optimisation, validation, and troubleshooting, while also assisting with routine analytical testing to support laboratory throughput and turnaround times. The role operates within the laboratory Quality Management System aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 and NATA accreditation requirements.
This position is ideal for a technically strong analytical chemist who enjoys solving technical problems, improving analytical methods, and working in a dynamic laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the QAQC Manager and Operations Manager, your duties will include but are not limited to:
Method Development & Improvement
- Support development, optimisation, and improvement of analytical methods
- Investigate QC failures and implement technical improvements
- Evaluate reagents, consumables, and instrument configurations to enhance method performance
Method Validation & Verification
- Design and perform validation and verification studies
- Compile technical data and support validation reports and audit documentation
- Establish QC criteria and monitoring strategies for routine testing
Instrument Management & Troubleshooting
- Maintain, calibrate, and verify laboratory instruments
- Troubleshoot analytical methods and instrumentation issues
- Coordinate service and maintenance activities where required
Method Implementation
- Prepare and update SOPs, technical methods, and laboratory documentation
- Support LIMS configuration including calculations and QC rules
- Provide technical training and competency support to laboratory staff
Routine Analytical Testing
- Perform sample preparation, analysis, calculations, and result entry
- Operate analytical instrumentation including GC, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS
- Monitor batch QC performance and investigate analytical issues
Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Work in accordance with the laboratory Quality Management System
- Support internal and external audit activities
- Ensure compliance with laboratory health, safety, and environmental procedures
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field
- 3–5 years’ experience in analytical laboratory testing
- Strong analytical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Experience working within NATA accredited ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory quality systems
- Experience with environmental laboratory instrumentation such as GC related instruments (GC-FID, GC-MS, P&T GC-MS), LC-MS/MS, ICP-OES / ICP-MS
- Strong technical documentation and report writing skills
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Flexibility to work occasional weekend or shift work when required
